In Hawaii’s warm, mineral-rich water systems, sediment can build up quickly in your water heater, reducing efficiency and shortening its lifespan. June is an ideal month to flush the tank before peak summer water usage.
1. Check for Signs of Sediment
Listen for popping or rumbling sounds when the heater is running. These are signs of trapped sediment heating unevenly.
2. Flush the Tank Safely
Turn off the power/gas and cold-water supply, attach a hose to the drain valve, and flush the tank until the water runs clear. Be careful—water may still be hot!
3. Inspect the Anode Rod
Sediment also accelerates corrosion. If you’re comfortable, check the anode rod and replace it if it’s significantly corroded to extend the life of your tank.
A yearly flush can improve energy efficiency, lower your utility bills, and help your water heater last longer in Hawaii’s unique conditions.
