Your kitchen works hard, especially during summer gatherings and family meals. Over time, grease and dust can collect inside your range hood and filters, reducing airflow and creating a potential fire hazard. August is a great time to give this often-overlooked area a thorough cleaning.
What to Do
1. Wash the Filter
Remove the range hood filter and soak it in hot water with dish soap to break down grease. Replace disposable filters as recommended by the manufacturer.
2. Wipe Down the Hood
Clean the inside and outside of the hood with a degreasing cleaner. Pay special attention to areas around the fan where grease tends to collect.
3. Check the Vent Opening
If your hood vents outdoors, make sure the exterior vent isn't blocked by leaves, dust, or debris. Good airflow helps remove heat and moisture from your kitchen.
4. Clean Around the Stove
While you're at it, wipe down the wall, backsplash, and cabinets surrounding the stove. Grease buildup in these areas can become difficult to remove if left for too long.
A clean range hood improves ventilation, reduces grease buildup, and helps keep your kitchen safer and fresher—an easy maintenance task with a worthwhile payoff.
