Flush and Clean Your AC Drain Line

As temperatures start to rise in Hawaiʻi, your AC system will be working harder—and one of the most overlooked issues is a clogged condensate drain line. In humid climates like ours, algae, mold, and debris can quickly build up in the line, leading to water leaks, musty odors, and even system shutdowns.

April is the perfect time to take care of this before peak cooling season begins.

What to Do

1. Locate the Drain Line

Find the PVC pipe near your indoor AC unit—this is where condensation drains out.

2. Flush with Vinegar or AC Cleaner

Pour a cup of white vinegar or a specialized AC cleaner into the line to break down algae and buildup.

3. Check for Slow Drainage

If water backs up or drains slowly, you may need a wet/dry vacuum to clear the blockage from the outside drain.

4. Inspect for Leaks or Overflow

Look around the AC unit for any signs of water pooling, which could indicate a clog or crack.

Keeping your AC drain line clean helps prevent water damage, improves efficiency, and keeps your home comfortable through Hawaiʻi’s warmer months.
