Clean and Protect Your Window Tracks

March is a great time to give attention to something many homeowners overlook—window and sliding door tracks. In Hawaiʻi, tradewinds, dust, sand, and salt air can quickly build up in these tracks, causing windows and doors to stick, corrode, or wear out prematurely.

Taking a little time this month to clean and protect them will help keep everything sliding smoothly and extend the life of your windows and doors.

What to Do

1. Vacuum Loose Debris

Start by vacuuming dirt, sand, and small debris from the tracks. This prevents scratching when you scrub.

2. Scrub with a Mild Cleaner

Use a toothbrush or small scrub brush with warm soapy water or vinegar to remove buildup from corners and grooves.

3. Dry and Lubricate the Track

After cleaning, dry the track thoroughly and apply a silicone-based lubricant. Avoid oil-based products, which attract more dust.

4. Check Drain Holes

Most window tracks have small drainage holes. Make sure they’re clear so rainwater can flow out properly—especially important during Hawaiʻi’s rainy months.

A quick track cleaning keeps your windows and sliding doors working smoothly and helps prevent corrosion caused by Hawaiʻi’s coastal climate.
